Most of the time you should always write in plain text so as to not annoy the recipient. Once in a while there is a need to send or reply in HTML. There is a short-cut to toggle between HTML and plain-text in Thunderbird when composing a message: Hold the shift-key when you "launch" the compose window or hit reply, and it will use the opposite mode of your profile.
Iceweasel (aka thunderbird) has a problem when two client boxes are both logged in to the same account at the same time. The first machine to apply the filter works fine - but the second machine won't see the mail move to the correct folder. The fix is
Set this to "true" and the second system will find new mail in sub-folders other than the main inbox.
